Although Dornbirn is a still relatively young town, it boasts the largest population of any town in Vorarlberg. Dornbirn is often associated with its Trade Fairs, or cited as a leading shopping centre. But its varied nightlife is also well worth a mention, with countless restaurants, bars and clubs just waiting to be visited. And Vorarlberg’s reputation for top-quality architecture reaches a peak in Dornbirn, where there are many surprises in store for the visitor.
Dornbirn’s central location makes it an ideal base for many activities in the area. Lake Constance is a mere hop, skip and a jump away, as are Switzerland, the Principality of Liechtenstein and parts of south-western Germany. The world-renowned Arlberg ski fields are also only about an hour’s drive away, and easily accessed by public transport.
The town is situated on the borders of the Eastern Alps, and boasts several mountain peaks of its own. The Karren peak (976m) is the „local“ mountain, and may be accessed by cable car. For more breathtaking mountain walking try the Staufen (1,465m), the Mörzelspitze and the Hohe Freschen. Excellently waymarked walking tracks lead up to the various summits, and walking maps are available in Hotel Krone.
Dornbirn offers visitors a wide choice of leisure activities. In addition to a plethora of sports facilities such as tennis, badminton, ice hockey and basketball, you cannot fail to be impressed by the town swimming complex and, in summer, the Enz Woodland Pool. too. On the cultural side of things Dornbirn’s Kulturhaus features an impressive events centre, which hosts an eclectic variety of performances and concerts. But the Spielboden and the Conrad Sohm venues also offer evening entertaiment, ranging from the light-hearted to the most sophisticated.
