The six most beautiful hiking destinations around Dornbirn

The classics - the Staufen and the HochälpelE

The Staufen (1,465 m) is Dornbirn's local mountain. That's why it has to be the first tip. Want to burn off some energy or prefer to enjoy nature at a more leisurely pace? The Staufen offers the perfect option.

  • The power-out option on the Staufen
The hike starts at the valley station of the Karrenbahn cable car. However, the ascent is on foot for sports enthusiasts. From the mountain station, you then head over the Kühberg and Schuttanen to the Staufenspitze. Only experienced hikers should go all the way up. On the way back at the latest: take a break at the Staufenalpe. Once you have returned to the valley, you will have covered a total of 13 kilometers in around 4.5 hours.

  • The Staufenrunde
The start here is already relaxed. This is because you take the Karrenbahn up the mountain. From here, the route is similar to the first option, except that you don't climb up to the Staufenspitze. However, you don't have to do without the wonderful view. The walk takes 2.5 hours for slow walkers.

At least once during the hiking season, we also say: up to the Hochälpele. We recommend taking the bus (city bus line 9) to the starting point in the Kehlegg district of Dornbirn. The 11-kilometre hike leads over the Pferre, the Gschwendtalpe up to the Hochälpele. At the Lank - great view! - and then take your time on the way back.

Three times Ebnit

We say: If you want to hike all around Dornbirn, you should go to Ebnit. From here, the hiking options are almost endless. The relaxation begins with the bus ride from Dornbirn to Ebnit. If you arrive relaxed at the starting point, you can enjoy the hike all the more, regardless of whether you are heading up the Schöner Mann (yes, that's the name of the mountain), the Hohe Kugel or the Bocksberg.

  • From Ebnit to the Schöner Mann
The starting point for this four-hour tour is at the Ebnit church. From there, it goes to Pfarrers Alpe, on to Alpe Schöner Mann and then up to Schöner Mann. At 1532 meters, it's time to sit down and enjoy the view. The way back leads via Alpe Hinterberg and then leisurely back down to Ebnit. The natural scenery here is beautiful. Nevertheless, you should be a good walker for this tour. Highly motivated hikers could also take on the Bocksberg - but we think: one summit per day is enough.

  • From Ebnit to the Bocksberg
The trail to the Bocksberg also starts at Ebnit church. It also leads past the Schöner Mann Alpe. On the way to the foot of the Bocksberg, you will experience a beautiful high moor. If you want to get all the way up to the 1461-metre summit, you have to take the via ferrata (rope safety, stirrups and ladders). Once at the top, there is only ever one thing to do: Enjoy the view of Lake Constance and also the Säntis. The way back is via the Bocksbergalpe in the direction of Ebnit. The starting point is reached again after three hours of hiking and around 550 meters in altitude.

  • From Ebnit to the Hohe Kugel
Take the bus to the Heumöser terminus. And off you go towards the Hohe Kugel. Almost 700 meters in altitude are covered on the scenic ascent. Our advice for every hike: don't rush, stop often and enjoy the mountain landscape. The Hohe Kugel is not a mountain peak in the conventional sense, but a high grassy hill - the all-round view is simply unbeatable on a fine day. Refreshments are part of hiking: So stop off at the Emser Hütte on the way back. Then head back down towards the bus station in Ebnit. If you don't take a break, you can complete the 9-kilometre tour in 3.5 hours. Those who enjoy the breaks will need a little longer - and that's exactly how it should be.

Good on foot? Mörzelspitze!

Our last tip is for those who are really good on foot. The tour to the Mörzelspitze - the highest peak of the Dornbirn First - is no mean feat with a walking time of around six hours and a distance of 14 kilometers. The starting point is Gütle. From here it goes via the Sattelalpe, to the Gütler Bergheim, on to the Hasengerach and Obersehrenalpe. The last section up to the Firstgrat ridge is stony. Once at the top, however, the reward for your efforts is great: views of the Kanisfluh and the Damüls mountains. The route then follows the ridge for 1.5 kilometers to the Mörzelspitze. Once you have arrived, signed the summit register and enjoyed the summit moment, you can begin the descent. Surefootedness is required here.
